Hinnonmaki Red Gooseberry is a thorny deciduous shrub with a compact mounding habit and lobed green foliage that turns bright red in fall. Insignificant white flowers in mid spring are followed by large edible red berries in mid summer that have sweet flesh but tart skin. Best flowering with full sun and well-drained soils. Drought tolerant once established.

MAINTENANCE NEEDS: Medium Maintenance. Needs regular summer and winter pruning to maximize fruit production. In wet, humid conditions, anthracnose, powdery mildew and fungal leaf spots can be troublesome. Check if your area has white pine blister rust before planting - while it won't bother the plant itself it can be a host for the disease.
