Forsythia

Forsythia is a flowering plant in the olive family. 

  • deciduous shrub
  • bright yellow blooms in early spring 

Two species of forsythia were the earliest species brought into Western gardens. 

  • Forsythia suspensa was first seen in a Japanese garden by the botanist-surgeon Carl Peter Thunberg. It reached Holland by 1833. 
  • Forsythia viridissma was discovered by the Scottish plant-hunter Robert Fortune in a Chinese garden.
