Grown for its succulent and juicy leaves that have a mild cabbage-like flavor.

  • The original variety of non-heading type cabbage is also known as Southern or Creole.
  • Grows up to 2 1/2 feet tall.
  • Produces broad, crumpled leaves.
  • Very popular in the South and growing in popularity in other regions.

  • SEED DEPTH: 1/2 inch
  • SEED SPACING: 1 inch apart in rows 3 feet apart
  • EMERGES: 7-14 days
  • MATURES: 70 days


  • Plant seeds outdoors in early spring as soon as ground can be worked.
  • Plant in rows 3 feet apart spacing seeds 1 inch apart.
  • Cover with 1/2 inch of fine soil, well pressed down.
  • Keep soil moist until seeds start to grow.


    • Germinated in 7-14 days depending on soil and weather conditions.


    • When plants are 2-3 inches high, thin or transplant 2 feet apart in rows.


    • May be planted in mid-summer for a late fall crop.
    • The flavor is improved after frost.
    • This variety will succeed where heading cabbages fail.
